Fieke de Roij

Fieke de Roij is a passionate sculptor whose lifelong fascination with stone has defined her artistic journey for over 25 years. Her work reflects a deep connection to the material itself, as she continuously draws inspiration from the diverse stones she collects—found, recycled, received, or purchased.

Her sculptures are clear, abstract, and intuitive, focusing on simplicity, tension, and balance. By removing all that is non-essential, Fieke creates works that resonate universally. The visible traces of her craftsmanship—such as chisel marks, fractured surfaces, or polished finishes—impart a personal signature to each piece. Her goal is to evoke atmospheres or associations, allowing space for individual interpretation.

Fieke’s work has gained international appreciation, and her sculptures are part of private collections worldwide.

Her dedication to the art of stone sculpting extends beyond her personal practice. In 2005, she founded Werk in Steen, a platform to share her love for the craft. Since 2007, Fieke has been teaching stone sculpting in her Utrecht studio, as well as hosting summer courses at locations in the Netherlands and France.

Fieke’s educational foundation includes a study of textiles and handicrafts at the Teacher Training College in Utrecht (1982–1988) and 3-dimensional art at the Vrije Academie in The Hague (1995–2000). In 2024, she celebrates her 30th anniversary as a sculptor and her many years of teaching—a milestone that underscores her dedication to her craft and her students.

Fieke’s work embodies her belief in the timeless beauty of stone and her ongoing exploration of its endless possibilities.
