Gert Jan Hammes graduated in architecture from TU Delft in 1997. After his studies, he found that in practice, more attention was focused on functionality rather than aesthetics. Gert Jan discovered his true calling in sculpture and has been giving it structured attention since 2006.
Gert Jan prefers not to design people, animals, plants, or buildings. Instead, he transforms natural stone according to the laws of projective geometry.
Over the years, his working method has changed. Initially, he worked with the shape a rough block already had. Nowadays, he uses rectangular blocks to carve out a completely self-designed design from there.
