Hećimović Marija

I am a contemporary artist, born in the Mediterranean part of Croatia. I have lived in Zagreb, its capital, for many years, where I completed my studies and completed my professional career.

Painting became my hobby in 2013, after I sent my first miniature, drawn as if from a game, to an international juried exhibition and successfully placed in the best competition and selection. Having gained confidence, I soon competed and exhibited at several more. Then, in 2014, I enrolled and diligently attended one, and 2 years later, another private school. So for 5 years, I studied the theory and techniques of drawing and painting in parallel, gained initial experience in painting skills and in performances at art exhibitions.

In addition to nature and everyday life, I draw inspiration from memory and imagination, allowing my intuition to guide me and improvisation to be my companion.

My landscapes are therefore most often not an expression of direct observation but of an ideal world that, I would say, successfully weaves through the layers of the history of European modern painting up to post-impressionism.

By combining textures and colors, I create vivid motifs in figurative or abstract painting, most often painting them on linen canvas, jute or mediapan, with acrylic or oil paints, but also with other techniques. I often make large paintings in 1m formats. Sometimes in a row, arranging diptychs and triptychs, but I also use medium and small formats.

I have exhibited my artwork to the public in 6 solo exhibitions and participated in 30 group exhibitions, 8 of which were international and 4 of which were juried.

In addition to physical exhibitions, I have occasionally exhibited my works on global web galleries. In one of them, launched in Canada, I competed in 2020 with my painting Hum for the picture of the month of May and won 3rd place in a competition of 3 thousand artworks.

I have responded to the organizers’ invitations several times and participated in several art colonies, and donated my works for humanitarian purposes: for the care of orphaned children several times; for various assistance to the Zagreb Paraplegic Association, several times; for equipping the hospital in Popovača; for collecting aid for those affected by the 2020 earthquake Markuševac near Zagreb; for the renovation of the regional Museum in Sinac – Lika;  …
