Joan Glasgow – Ashton
I am a Jamaican visual artist based in the United Kingdom. From ever since I can remember,I’ve always been making something from whatever was lying around. As a child creating in my own little world was my happy place. Fast-forward to 2025 and I’m the same.I continue to challenge myself by experimenting with different mediums.
In Jamaica I attended the Edna Manley College for Visual and Performing Arts, specialising in painting. I recently completed a Ba(Hons) in Fine Art Practice 2024,Brighton.
I’m currently doing a residency in ceramics at Common Clay in Bexhill-on-Sea,which is a part of the Beeching Road studios complex where I also have my studio.
I’m a member of the Hastings Art Forum and have exhibited work in Jamaica and the United Kingdom.
I’m very lucky to be a part of the vibrant art community in Hastings as there is always a range of creative activities to get involved in. For example ,artist and makers markets and festivals.
I consider myself to be a mix- media artist with a painting background. My practice is informed and influenced by life experiences, social commentary and relationships. I continue to challenge myself by experimenting with different mediums and techniques which allows my practice to evolve.
I’ve recently rediscovered the joy of drawing after visiting the William Kentrige exhibition at the Royal Academy in London.
Recently I have been painting from my collages ,making sculpture from clay, wire, wood and expanding foam. Also lino printing, embroidery and water colour painting
I sometimes work in a process driven way, where my interest is in exploring the properties, changes and interaction of materials.
