Matthias Conrad

Matthias Conrad is a photographer specializing in landscape and nature photography. His journey with photography began in his early years, experimenting with his family’s analog EXA and Praktica cameras in his hometown on the edge of Hainich National Park, Germany. The deep connection to nature he developed as a child has remained a guiding force throughout his life, shaping both his artistic vision and professional career. Over a decade ago, Conrad fell in love with the Swiss Alps—their towering peaks, ever-changing light, and vast glaciers completely captivated him. Each mountain has its own personality, from rugged and imposing to serene and elegant. While witnessing the effects of climate change on retreating glaciers was unsettling, it also strengthened his determination to document their beauty before they disappear. These ancient ice formations, shimmering under the sun, serve as both a testament to nature’s splendor and a stark reminder of the environmental changes shaping our planet. Beyond the glaciers, the Engadin Valley holds a special place in his heart. Its winding rivers, lush meadows, and quaint villages create a landscape that feels almost surreal—like something out of a storybook. The ever-shifting weather conditions add an element of excitement, with each visit offering new perspectives and moods to capture. With over ten years of experience photographing and exploring Switzerland, Austria, and southern Germany, Conrad now leads workshops and photo tours, guiding others through these breathtaking landscapes. His deep familiarity with the terrain allows him to craft personalized experiences, helping participants discover the most awe-inspiring locations while improving their photographic skills. His work is also shaped by long-term projects that allow him to explore different facets of nature: “Botanical Studies” delves into the intricate beauty of plant life, capturing details often overlooked. Through this project, Conrad highlights the delicate structures, organic patterns, and fleeting moments of transformation in the botanical world. “Lights, Shadows, and Glaciers” is an artistic exploration of the interplay between light and ice, documenting the breathtaking textures, contrasts, and evolving landscapes of glacial regions. This project is both a celebration of natural beauty and a visual commentary on the urgency of climate change. Through his photography, Matthias Conrad seeks to share the beauty of our world, foster a deeper connection with nature, and inspire others to see landscapes in a new light.
