Sean Christopher Ward

Sean Ward
Sean Ward is a mixed-media artist specializing in Op Art, drawing inspiration from the masters of the movement. His work embraces the principles of flat design to create depth and kinetic movement, achieved through precise hard edges, masterfully placed colors, and the strategic use of negative space. The result is artwork that appears to shift and pulse within the viewer’s perception, despite existing on a flat, two-dimensional plane.
Expanding beyond traditional canvases, Sean is now exploring immersive projection mapping and video art, where static and motion elements merge to push the boundaries of perception even further. His innovative approach leverages every available technological tool to uphold a commitment to excellence—often dedicating weeks or even months to perfecting each piece.
With works featured in over 950 permanent and private collections across every continent, Sean’s art continues to evolve and reach new audiences. Notable collectors include Aaron Lux, Bob Dylan, Elton John, GitLab, Julie Floyd, Julien Hall, Milan Kordestani, Planetary Holdings, The Center for Women’s Wellness, The Pixies, and Universal Studios Japan.

The collection explores various dimensions of visual perception and memory through meticulously crafted, multi-layered works.
In Expanded Perception, created for Art Basel, the artist applies up to ten layers of paint and resin on panels using precise techniques to produce kinetic, op art effects, where even accidental marks contribute to the piece’s character. Fading Identities examines the nature of memory and celebrity, suggesting that while detailed images fade over time, fragments of identity endure much like long-term memories. Chromatic Hallucinations delves into the universal human attraction to patterns and color—elements that not only evoke cultural meaning but also help reduce stress and expand creative vision. In Cognitive Expedition, the artist revisits his foundational process, starting with black-and-white sketches that evolve into intricate psychedelic works, emphasizing that each flawless piece is the result of rigorous, one-go creations. Lastly, Dream Machine transforms static designs into dynamic visual experiences through advanced digital techniques, reflecting the artist’s eight-year history of creating immersive backdrops and video art for live performances.
